Leaders of Tomorrow, Difference Makers of Today

Never too Young

At Woodgrove Secondary School, age is not the limit. We believe that the youth of today can do awesome things to forge a stronger learning community for a better tomorrow. Let's take a look at what some of them are up to!

Opportunity in Crisis

When COVID-19 struck, physical concerts could no longer be held but my team and I had other plans. We were challenged and believed that we should not be paralysed by our circumstances. Together with the team, we conceptualised a concert in the classroom experience for Woodgrove Awesome, our school's talent showcase. Initially, my team struggled with applying our technical expertise under such unprecedented circumstances. However, under the guidance of our teachers, and several attempts of recording and video editing, we soon got the knack of it and managed to produce a product that we were very proud of. On that day itself, the cheers and applause reverberated around the classroom blocks and at that moment, I knew that we had achieved what we wanted. This experience has taught me to be undaunted in times of crisis and together with the Woodgrove community, we can weather through all storms.

Our Leap of Faith in front of 1000 people

We were in Secondary One when Mr Christon gave us the opportunity to become emcees for the school's National Day Celebrations. Initially, we were afraid as we had never done this before and being on stage in front of more than 1000 students can be pretty scary. We were also wondering about what might happen if we forget about our lines. Nontheless, we decided to take the leap of faith and plunge into the unknown. Our teacher also had great faith in us and gave us various opportunities to practice our lines during the rehearsals. We learnt about working as a team during the rehearsal process as we had to coordinate with the technical crew and various performance items. Even more importantly, we mastered the art of being confident speakers who not only deliver lines, but also convey our message with conviction and emotion. We are glad to have this wonderful opportunity and we hope to guide our new Secondary One juniors soon!

From the Classroom to Stagecraft

As a member of the Drama Club and a student of English Literature, the world of theatre intrigues me. So when the opportunity to devise a performance for Teacher's Day came, I seized it without much hesitation. Even though it was my first time devising a performance from scratch, I had fun embarking on the challenge. I crafted a draft script and rallied my friends to particpate in it. I am grateful that they were willing to join me on this project. We had a number of rehearsals and I learnt to be adaptable by modifying the script to cater to the acting needs of my friends. I also harnessed communication skills as I had to not only coordinate the actors, but also technical crew. It was really a rewarding experience seeing my teammates transform the script to a performance on stage. Even more importantly, I am proud that the team managed to pull off a performance that entertained my schoolmates and teachers.

Harnessing the Sun for a Greener Future

You would have probably heard of green technologies such as Solar Panels but have you ever heard about Organic Solar Cells? Well, this could be the next big thing for the future and I am proud to be part of it. Together with my friends, I embarked on a learning journey to the Science Centre to fabricate and assemble organic solar cells. I explored the possibility of this technology which replaces chlorophyll in green plants with organic dyes such as blueberry extract. Through this workshop, I learnt that organic solar cells could play a major role in sustainable living in the future because they are easily integrated with other products, semi-transparent and lightweight! I hope to explore more ways science can help us lead environmentally friendly lives.
